Presented by: Dr. Beth DeKoninck, DNP, FNP-C Associate Professor of Nursing University of Saint Francis - Fort Wayne, IN Dementia has various causes with the most common cause being Alzheimer’s disease. In 2018, approximately 5.7 million people in the U.S. lived with Alzheimer’s disease and by 2050 this number is expected to more than double because of the aging of the population (Alzheimer’s Association, 2018). Dementia is becoming a global epidemic and it is important to understand aspects of this disease such as prevalence, causes, prevention and possible therapies on the horizon. We will address all of these issues in this lecture with the hope of gaining a better understanding of the nature and impact of this disease.
